CLERMONT, France (AP) — Nice moved to the top of the French league on Friday after Hicham Boudaoui’s goal gave it a 1-0 win away at Clermont.The Algerian midfielder scored with a tap-in after 73 minutes to extend the club’s unbeaten start to the French league.It was Nice’s fourth 1-0 win in its last five league games. Gaetan Laborde missed a first-half penalty for the visitors that could have given them a bigger margin of victory.Nice leapfrogged south coast rival Monaco to provisionally go two points clear at the top of Ligue 1. Judge denies request to raise Mikey Williams’ bail and sets trial in shooting for Dec. 14

(AP) — A San Diego County Superior Court judge on Friday rejected a request to raise star Memphis basketball recruit Mikey Williams’ bail for what the prosecution said was a threatening social media post, and granted a speedy trial for the 19-year-old on nine felony charges stemming from a March 17 shooting incident in which no one was injured.Judge Kathleen M. Lewis denied Deputy District Attorney George Modlin’s request to raise Williams’ bail to $500,000. The player has been free on a $50,000 bond since his arrest on April 13. Lewis set trial for Dec. 14 on six counts of assault with a weapon, one count of firing into an occupied vehicle and two counts of making threats that could result in great bodily injury or death. NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks stumbled on Wall Street, bringing the S&P 500 10% below the peak it reached in July and putting the benchmark index into what’s called a “correction.”The S&P 500 fell 0.5%, or 19.86 points, to close at 4,117.37 Friday and is now 10.3% below its July 31 high of 4,588.96. That marks its 10th loss in the last 12 days. Stocks have fallen the past three months as investors face the reality of higher interest rates, with Federal Reserve officials talking about keeping rates “higher for longer” and the yield on the 10-year Treasury reaching levels not seen since 2007. FALMOUTH, Maine (AP) — Maine’s close-knit community of deaf and hard of hearing people is grieving in the wake of the Lewiston shootings that killed beloved members, many of whom were ardent advocates.The shootings, at a bowling alley and a bar in Lewiston, killed at least four people in the deaf community, the Maine Educational Center for the Deaf said Friday. The Alpine Rescue Team, which has provided search and rescue services in Colorado for over 60 years, recorded over 130 calls per year since 2014. Explosion 1 million times brighter than the Milky Way creates rare elements

(CNN) — The James Webb Space Telescope and other observatories witnessed a massive explosion in space that created rare chemical elements, some of which are necessary for life.The explosion, observed on March 7, was the second brightest gamma-ray burst ever witnessed by telescopes in more than 50 years of observations, over one million times brighter than the entire Milky Way Galaxy combined. Gamma-ray bursts are short emissions of the most energetic form of light.This particular burst, called GRB 230307A, was likely created when two neutron stars — the incredibly dense remnants of stars after a supernova — merged in a galaxy about one billion light-years away.
