AUSTIN (KXAN) — More than 3,000 acres have burned in wildfires across Central Texas so far this year, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service.A total of 35 fires have burned 3,052 acres in the 15-county KXAN viewing area, as of Aug. 18. How far behind normal are rainfall totals this year? KXAN is keeping track of wildfires this year. Follow along with the map and database below. Galway CSD voting on banning books

GALWAY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – On Thursday night, the Galway Central School District voted on a measure that would ban two books. One board member was absent, the vote resulted in a tie, now they will vote on it again on Monday at a special Board of Education meeting.The two books in question are “The 57 Bus” and “Ink Knows No Borders," both written for teens by non-fiction authors. They were part of the summer reading curriculum for some Galway Central School District students.“The 57 Bus” tells the story of a teen who was set on fire by another teen while riding a bus in Oakland, California. It’s about the intersection of race, class, gender, crime, and punishment. “Ink Knows No Borders” is a collection of poetry bringing together the experiences of teen immigrants and refugees.A spokesperson for the district said that Superintendent Brita Donovan did not want to speak with NEWS10 on camera until the board of education reaches a decision on the matter. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (NEWS10) - A 15-year-old entrepreneur in Glenville gaining attention this summer for his business that helps racing fans secure their favorite spots at the track. Griffen Miller, a.k.a Canopy Kid, hit the trifecta when he started his canopy business at the Saratoga Race Course.The most bookings he can do each day is four. On normal race days he charges $125 for the setup, which includes a canopy, spot selection, six chairs and a folding table. For major race days, like Travers Day, he charges $250. Illinois launches $20M grocery initiative to help underserved communities

VENICE, Ill. - To bring more grocery stores and fresh produce to food deserts in Illinois, Governor J.B. Pritzker signed new legislation Friday morning. "We're moving as fast as we can because we know that there's a need all across the state," he said.SB 850 establishes the Illinois Grocery Initiative. Lawsuit alleges excessive force during traffic stop of Black man by Aurora police

The Aurora Police Department is facing another lawsuit alleging excessive force against a Black man, this time during a 2021 traffic stop that ended in the man being dragged out of his car, tased and arrested.Antonio Johnson, 43, was stopped on Aug. 22, 2021, for incorrectly displaying a temporary license plate, according to the complaint filed in U.S. District Court and a police statement in video footage provided by Johnson’s attorney. Johnson was “generally complying” with officers’ demands but not perfectly, the complaint states, and rather than de-escalating the situation by talking calmly to him, the officers chose to escalate. Johnson was arrested on charges of obstructing a peace officer, driving under restraint, driving under the influence and having an open alcohol container in a vehicle, court records show.
